Living near the Gulf Coast means hurricane season is part of the calendar, roughly June through November. Your roof is your home's first line of defense against wind-driven rain, and a little preparation before the season makes a real difference when a storm actually arrives.
Before the season: get ahead of it
The best time to prepare is on a calm, dry day, not when a storm is in the forecast. A pre-season check should cover the things that fail under high wind and heavy rain:
- Have loose, lifted, or missing shingles secured so wind cannot get under them.
- Confirm flashing around chimneys, vents, and skylights is sound.
- Clear gutters and downspouts so heavy rain drains instead of backing up.
- Trim back tree limbs that could break onto the roof.
- Document the roof's current condition with photos for your records.
A pre-season roof inspection catches the weak points while there is still time to fix them.
When a storm is in the forecast
Once a system is heading toward the Gulf, focus on what you can still do safely from the ground: secure or bring in loose outdoor items that could become projectiles, clear the last of the gutter debris, and make sure you have your insurance information and those before-storm photos handy. Do not get up on the roof with weather moving in.
"You cannot stop a hurricane, but a roof that was sound and well-secured going in handles one far better than one that was already worn. Prep before the season, not during it."
Shawn, Owner, Blue Rhino RoofingAfter the storm: stay safe, document everything
Once it is safe, check from the ground for displaced shingles, debris, and any obvious damage, and look in the attic for new leaks or stains. If you find an active leak, our guide on emergency tarping and leak steps covers what to do right now. Photograph everything before any temporary repairs, because that documentation supports your claim.
